Unlike other drinks born out of creativity and imagination, Irish coffee sprang from necessity. It came about in the 1940s, at a time when Pan Am flying boats were used to make Atlantic crossings before large airports with long runways existed. Meeting his American passengers as they disembarked on the water in Foynes Ireland, Chef Joe Sheridan, a head chef at a nearby restaurant, decided to prepare something special to warm up the passengers. He brewed dark, rich coffee, added in some Irish whiskey, a little brown sugar and floated freshly whipped cream on top of each cup. The story goes that there was a hushed silence as people drank this brew for the first time. "Hey Buddy," said a surprised American passenger, "is this Brazilian coffee?" "No," said Joe, "that's Irish Coffee."
Although our coffee does not contain any alcohol, it does deliver the same liqueur flavor that comes to mind. So try a bag and wait for that "hushed silence" as you drink your first cup. And don't forget the whipped topping!
